Cold Night, Hot Scottish: Cease and Desist

Ol' Red's Cease and Desist
Erie Brewing Company
10.1 percent ABV
12 oz. bottle
Sampled: Jan. 9, 2010

A certain BB gunmaker objected to this ale’s original Red Ryder name, so Erie Brewing Company took the legal action in stride, switching it to Cease and Desist. Wee heavy falls at the strong end of the Scottish ale spectrum, so Erie has crafted something strong enough for the coldest bout of Lake Effect snow.

From a razor-thin lace, the nose erupts with cherry, caramel and a backbone of black pepper, unsurprising since Cease and Desist just leaps the 10 percent hurdle.

Those flavors carry over to the body, with a dose of mild apple entering the mix. After a few sips, peppery heat lingers on the roof of the mouth. Prior to the alcoholic close lies a little thrust of malt, the redness peaking before its descent into pepper.

The peppery heat definitely lingers on the top of the mouth after a few sips. While I expected it to grow to obnoxious levels, the heat keeps its ambiance. That provides a gentle afterglow to all those sharp red flavors. Cease and Desist is hardly the most dynamic strong Scottish ale – that honor goes to Skullsplitter – but on the coldest night Nashville will see this year, it fits to a tee. I recommend it any time the mercury dips below freezing.

Rating: 7.5/10
